“The Report Isn’t the Whole Story”: Why Feedback Sessions Matter More Than People Realise

A good feedback session helps translate assessment results into understanding, confidence, and practical next steps.

A report gives information. Feedback creates meaning.

Psychological assessment reports can contain a lot of information: test scores, observations, diagnostic conclusions, recommendations, and clinical reasoning. But people often need a conversation to understand what the results actually mean for real life.

Feedback helps with

  • Understanding diagnosis
  • Clarifying strengths and needs
  • Making recommendations practical
  • Asking questions
  • Planning next steps

Why it matters emotionally

  • Assessment results can feel big
  • People may need time to process
  • Families may hear results differently
  • Questions often arise after testing
  • Feedback helps reduce confusion

At Choice Point Psychology, we view feedback sessions as an essential part of assessment. We also offer therapy for people who would like support after assessment, and supervision for psychologists wanting to strengthen assessment and feedback skills.

“Assessment is not finished when the testing ends. It is finished when the findings become useful.”
