Autism Strengths Bingo: Different, Not Deficient

A neuroaffirming look at autism, strengths, masking, and understanding yourself differently.

Autism does not have one “look.” Some autistic people are quiet. Some are chatty. Some love routines. Some crave novelty. Some avoid eye contact. Some have learned to make eye contact so well that nobody notices how exhausting it feels.

At Choice Point Psychology, we provide neuroaffirming autism assessments for children, adolescents, and adults. Our aim is not to reduce people to a diagnosis, but to help them understand their profile of strengths, challenges, needs, and identity.

Autism Strengths Bingo

How many of these resonate with you or your child?

Strong sense of justice Deep interests Honest communication
Excellent memory Creative thinking Passionate learner
Notices details others miss Deep loyalty Unique perspective

This is not a diagnostic tool — it is a strengths-based reflection activity.

Autism Is More Than a List of Difficulties

Autism is often discussed in terms of social communication differences, sensory sensitivities, routines, restricted interests, and repetitive behaviours. These features can be important to understand, especially when they affect daily functioning.

But autistic people also commonly have meaningful strengths, including deep focus, pattern recognition, honesty, creativity, loyalty, strong memory, and passionate areas of interest.

Sensory World

Sounds, textures, lights, smells, and crowds may feel more intense or overwhelming.

Social Energy

Social interaction may be enjoyable, confusing, draining, or highly dependent on context.

Masking

Many autistic people learn to hide traits, copy others, or perform socially to fit in.

What Makes an Autism Assessment Neuroaffirming?

A neuroaffirming autism assessment should:

  • Consider strengths as well as challenges
  • Explore masking, burnout, sensory needs, and social communication differences
  • Respect the person’s lived experience
  • Avoid stereotypes about what autism “should” look like
  • Consider co-occurring ADHD, anxiety, learning difficulties, or mood concerns
  • Provide practical recommendations for home, school, work, therapy, and daily life

Our assessment process may include clinical interviews, developmental history, questionnaires, cognitive assessment, school or workplace information, and autism-specific assessment tools where appropriate.

Why Autism Assessment Can Be Empowering

For many children, teens, and adults, assessment can help explain years of feeling different, misunderstood, overwhelmed, or exhausted from masking. It can also help families, schools, workplaces, and support teams better understand what the person needs to thrive.

For Psychologists and Supervisees

Neuroaffirming autism assessment and formulation are important areas for psychologists seeking supervision, particularly when working with high-masking clients, children, adolescents, adults, ADHD/autism overlap, and complex differential diagnosis.

Final thought: Autism is not about missing pieces. Sometimes it is about seeing the puzzle differently.
