“Smart, Successful… and Completely Exhausted”: Why So Many Adults Seek Autism Assessments Later in Life

Many adults seek autism assessment after years of coping, masking, overthinking, and wondering why everyday life seems to take so much more effort than it appears to take for everyone else.

Adult autism assessment

Why now?

For many adults, autism was not considered earlier because they were doing “too well” on the outside. They may have finished school, worked, parented, studied, maintained relationships, or built careers — while privately feeling overwhelmed, socially depleted, sensory overloaded, or chronically burnt out.

Common triggers for assessment

  • A child receives an autism or ADHD diagnosis
  • Burnout becomes harder to ignore
  • Work, parenting, or study demands increase
  • Therapy opens up new questions
  • ADHD assessment raises the possibility of autism too

What adults often recognise

  • Years of masking or social copying
  • Strong need for recovery after social contact
  • Sensory sensitivities
  • Feeling different but not knowing why
  • Exhaustion from “performing normal”

Assessment is not about rewriting your life

A late autism assessment is not about finding something “wrong”. It is often about finding a better explanation. Many people describe assessment as a process of finally understanding why certain things were always harder, why some environments were so draining, and why they had needed so much effort to get through life.

At Choice Point Psychology, we provide neuroaffirming autism and ADHD assessments for adults, adolescents, and children. We also offer therapy to support adjustment, self-understanding, and practical strategies after diagnosis.

“A late diagnosis does not change who you are. It can change how kindly you understand who you have always been.”
