What Does “Neuroaffirming” Mean?

Neuroaffirming care

Supporting Different Minds to Thrive

At Choice Point Psychology, neuroaffirming care means creating a space where neurodivergent people are understood, respected and supported without being asked to hide or change who they are.

□ Understand the person. Adapt the environment. Support authentic growth.
Understanding neurodiversity

What Does Neuroaffirming Mean?

Being neuroaffirming means more than simply knowing about neurodiversity. It means embracing and respecting neurological differences as natural parts of human variation.

Neurodiversity recognises that people naturally differ in how they think, process information, communicate, regulate emotion and experience the world.

Autism, ADHD, dyslexia and other neurodivergent experiences are not problems to fix. They are meaningful parts of a person’s identity and can bring valuable strengths, perspectives and ways of thinking.

□

Respecting identity

We value neurodivergent identities rather than treating difference as something that should be concealed or corrected.

✨

Working with strengths

We use each person’s interests, knowledge, abilities and existing strategies as foundations for growth.

□

Considering the environment

We recognise that many challenges arise when environments, expectations and systems do not accommodate neurological difference.

Therapy that adapts to you

Neuroaffirming Therapy

You do not need to change who you are simply to fit in. Our approach focuses on helping you better understand yourself, navigate challenges and build a life that feels sustainable and authentic.

□

Strengths-based growth

Your interests, passions and abilities can become practical tools for building confidence, skills and meaningful change.

□

No pressure to mask

We do not ask you to hide your neurodivergence. We support self-understanding, self-advocacy and strategies that fit you.

□

Sustainable strategies

We focus on approaches that help you navigate your world without placing unrealistic demands on your energy or wellbeing.

Sensory-friendly sessions may include:

□ Fidgets and sensory objects
□️ Weighted pillows or blankets
□ Softer or reduced lighting
⏸️ Breaks when needed
□ Flexible seating
□ Clear communication
Accessible and respectful assessment

Neuroaffirming Assessments

Psychological assessments can feel unfamiliar, demanding or stressful. We aim to make the process transparent, flexible and supportive while still gathering the information required for a thorough and clinically meaningful evaluation.

□

More Than a Test Score

Formal assessment results are only one part of the picture. We also consider your history, daily experiences, sensory needs, communication, strengths, interests and the environments in which you live, learn or work.

The purpose is not to describe how far you differ from an imagined “normal”. It is to develop a meaningful understanding of your individual profile and identify supports that may genuinely help.

□ Before we begin
We ask about sensory preferences, communication needs and helpful adjustments before starting the assessment.
□️ The environment
Flexible seating, movement, fidgets, sensory supports and breaks may be incorporated throughout the appointment.
□ Communication
We use clear and direct instructions, explain what to expect and allow additional processing time when needed.
□ Interpretation
Test results are interpreted alongside lived experience, context, interests, adaptive functioning and existing strengths.
□ Reporting
Reports describe abilities and support needs rather than presenting the person as a collection of deficits.
□ Recommendations
Recommendations focus on access to suitable environments, accommodations, supports and practical strategies.

✕ A deficit-only approach

  • Focuses mainly on what a person cannot do.
  • Uses neurotypical behaviour as the primary standard.
  • May prioritise compliance or appearing less different.
  • Can overlook context, sensory needs and compensatory effort.

✓ A neuroaffirming approach

  • Recognises strengths alongside genuine support needs.
  • Considers the interaction between the person and environment.
  • Supports authenticity, access and informed self-understanding.
  • Identifies practical accommodations and meaningful supports.
“
Our role is not to fix who you are. It is to understand, validate and support you in building a full, rich and meaningful life.
Our philosophy

Difference Is Not Deficiency

We believe neurodivergent minds bring creativity, honesty, focus, depth, innovation and valuable perspectives to relationships, workplaces and communities.

Every neurodivergent person is different. Rather than making assumptions based on a diagnostic label, we take the time to understand the individual person, their circumstances and what support means for them.

□

Respected

Your individuality and lived experience are taken seriously.

⚙️

Accommodated

We adapt our environment, communication and processes.

□

Celebrated

Your abilities, interests and perspectives are recognised.

Our neuroaffirming framework

From Understanding to Meaningful Support

Neuroaffirming practice is not about ignoring genuine difficulties. It is about understanding those difficulties accurately and responding in a way that preserves dignity, autonomy and identity.

→
2

Understand

Consider strengths, differences, demands, context and support needs.

→
3

Adapt

Adjust communication, environments, expectations and strategies.

→
4

Empower

A continuing commitment

Come as You Are

Being neuroaffirming is not simply a phrase or a therapeutic technique. It is an ongoing commitment to listening, learning, adapting and treating every person with dignity.

At Choice Point Psychology, you can expect to be seen, heard and supported as your authentic self.
