“You Don’t Look Autistic”
(And Other Things People Say Before an Autism Assessment)

Why autistic adults, teenagers, and children are often misunderstood — and how neuroaffirming autism and ADHD assessments can help people finally understand themselves with clarity, compassion, and evidence-based support.

Some autistic people spend years — sometimes decades — trying to figure out why life feels harder than it “should”.

They may be described as:

“Too sensitive”
Emotionally overwhelmed by noise, people, or change.
“Too blunt”
Direct communication mistaken for rudeness.
“Too quiet”
Exhausted from trying to socially “perform”.
“Too much”
Intense interests, emotions, thoughts, or sensory experiences.

Sometimes these individuals are diagnosed with anxiety, depression, burnout, or emotional dysregulation long before anyone considers autism or ADHD.

Sometimes nobody notices at all — because the person has become incredibly good at masking.

High-Masking Autism Often Looks Like “Coping”

Especially in girls, women, intelligent adults, and people who are socially motivated, autism can remain hidden for years.

Many autistic people learn to rehearse conversations, copy body language, force eye contact, suppress stimming, overanalyse social situations, and carefully monitor how they appear to others.

From the outside, this can look like someone is “doing fine”. Internally, it may feel exhausting.

What Does a Neuroaffirming Autism Assessment Actually Look At?

A high-quality autism assessment is not about trying to “catch someone out” or deciding whether a person is “autistic enough”.

At Choice Point Psychology, neuroaffirming psychological assessments focus on understanding how a person experiences the world — including communication, sensory processing, attention, emotional regulation, relationships, learning patterns, burnout, masking, and daily functioning.

Autism Assessments

Comprehensive autism assessments for children, adolescents, and adults.

ADHD Assessments

Neuroaffirming ADHD assessments that explore executive functioning, attention, motivation, and regulation.

Cognitive & Learning Assessments

Cognitive and academic testing to understand learning strengths, difficulties, and support needs.

Assessments can help individuals better understand themselves, access supports, advocate for adjustments, improve relationships, and reduce years of shame or confusion.

Why People Seek Autism or ADHD Assessment

Common Questions About Autism Assessments

Can adults be diagnosed with autism?

Absolutely. Many autistic adults are diagnosed later in life after years of masking, burnout, anxiety, or feeling “different”.

Can someone be autistic and social?

Yes. Autism is not the absence of social interest. Many autistic people deeply value connection, but may communicate or process social information differently.

What if I’m “high functioning”?

Someone can appear capable externally while still experiencing significant internal stress, sensory overwhelm, executive functioning difficulties, or burnout.

Understanding Yourself Should Feel Empowering

Whether you are seeking an autism assessment, ADHD assessment, cognitive assessment, therapy, or clinical supervision, our team aims to provide thoughtful, neuroaffirming, evidence-based support.

“Sometimes the problem was never that you were ‘too much’.
Sometimes you were simply trying to survive in environments that asked you to be less yourself.”
